The Linguistic Development of Cross-Strait Kua-A-Tsheh in Southern Min

This book aims to explore the linguistic characteristics of Kua-A-Tsheh from "historical" and "cross-strait" perspectives. The "historical context" examines the changes and phenomena in Kua-A-Tsheh literature over time, from the Qing dynasty, Japanese colonial period, to post-war era. Meanwhile, the "cross-strait contex" adopts a synchronic approach, comparing Kua-A-Tsheh from Xiamen and Shanghai in mainland China with those from Taipei, Hsinchu, Taichung, Chiayi, and Tainan in Taiwan, analyzing their similarities and differences.

In terms of research methods, this book attempts to use the "synchronic-diachronic-regional-structural" framework as the foundation for discussing the linguistic evolution. Specifically, it comprehensively conducts an analysis of Kua-A-Tsheh from aspects such as Chinese character writing, grammatical functions, rhyme schemes, and vocabulary selection. By distinguishing elements that stem from historical inheritance and from those that reflect localized innovations, the book further identifies patterns and types of linguistic evolution. Finally, it redefines the periodization of linguistic development in Kua-A-Tsheh by referencing the development of linguistic forms and related publishing circumstances.
