T. A. Hsia was an important writer and critic of the 1950s in Taiwan. He was a professor of English at National Taiwan University and the chief-editor of the highly respected Literature Magazine. However, his importance lies more in his own life experience and the intellectual network he created across the Taiwan Strait and the Pacific, as well as his engagement with Cold War culture and history through his writing and research. While attentive to his work in editing, teaching, research, translation, and fiction writing, this anthology emphasizes his three major contribution: in the formation of modern Chinese literature, in the humanist focus on the nebulous boundary between good and evil, and in his research on the Chinese left-wing literary movement and Chinese Communist terminology, all of which intend to underscore his deep understanding of the vernacular in the creation of poetry, as well as his literary thoughts and practices. Thus, the anthology includes three articles on Chinese left-wing writing and Chinese Communist terminology which were previously unpublished in Chinese. It is hoped that with the inclusion of these articles, the anthology will present the multi-dimensionality of T. A. Hsia as a writer, critic, and scholar working in and against the tides of Cold War politics.
