National Taiwan University EMI Teaching and Learning Center (NTU EMI TLC) believes the EMI teaching model could foster students' international perspectives and cross-cultural communication skills, leading to broader career prospects. Hence, NTU EMI TLC has published the "EMI Empowerment Toolkit" to share practical guidelines and strategies for EMI practice to help practitioners better encounter and overcome EMI challenges.
This book includes four chapters. The first chapter focuses on the emergence of EMI, discusses its definition and origin, compares it with other bilingual education models, and discusses the current EMI development in Taiwan. The second chapter introduces the Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) and the BOPPPS lesson planning model. ISW is an intensive instructor development program and one of the essential pedagogical frameworks for enhancing teaching effectiveness at NTU. The third chapter reviews the challenges instructors and students may encounter in the EMI setting and introduces the corresponding solutions. The final chapter explores the role of digital tools in the EMI classroom, such as interactive teaching software applications to enhance students' engagement in class, ChatGPT's application to enrich lesson planning and efficiency, and the use of various audio-visual software for recording instructional videos.
We, NTU EMI TLC, hope to share the NTU experience with nationwide EMI practitioners, students, and anyone concerned with the subject. We firmly believe sharing is the best path for mutual growth and joint success of EMI in Taiwan's higher education.
