Historian Professor Yang Yun-ping once said, “In the urban landscape of Taiwan studies, there is not a single alley or path that does not reflect the ‘shadow’ of Ino Kanori.” From the Japanese ruling period to the early post-war period and even to the present day, the footsteps of Ino Kanori have indeed influenced every corner of the field of Taiwan studies.
Hailing from the rural town of Tono in northeastern Japan, Ino Kanori arrived in Taiwan with the expansion of the modern Japanese Empire, where he gradually embarked on his research journey in Taiwan. After the end of the colonial era, his works underwent post-colonial appropriation and regeneration. Through an analysis of Ino Kanori’s works, this book presents both the figure of Ino Kanori and his era. Furthermore, through Ino Kanori, it traces the colonial imprints on the construction of contemporary Taiwanese history and culture.
This extended edition includes additional sections on Ino Kanori’s fieldwork techniques, research on Han Chinese society, and Taiwan’s historical writing, with expanded discussions and added text and image content. The appendix provides updates on the publication of Kanori’s works and commemorative events in Taiwan and Japan since 2014. The revisions reflect criticism and feedback from readers and academia since the initial publication of the book, as well as insights gained from the author’s involvement in editing and planning exhibitions related to Ino Kanori’s works and “Return to the Field” initiatives over the years.
