This book examines the fundamental characteristics of “Chinese literature” as a “lyrical tradition” through both theoretical reflection and the exploration of representative works. It explores various expressions in theory, poetry, fiction, and prose, developing an alternative perspective and approach to understanding Chinese literature.
Starting with the idea that “poetry can express grievances,” the author analyzes the ontological consciousness of the lyrical tradition. The book provides a theoretical interpretation of “Preface to the Orchid Pavilion,” discusses the concepts of divine thought and imagination, and explores Liu Xie’s views on literary creation. It examines the depiction of feminine beauty in Han Wei and Six Dynasties poetry through the metaphor of three “Eves” oscillating between aesthetics and ethics, considering moral, spiritual, and sensory aspects. The author also uses the metaphor of “the traveler’s subtle feelings” to discuss nostalgic lyrics, and describes the transition from “earth-shattering” to “silent and deserted” in directly expressing the heroes of “Water Margin.” The mythical structure of “Dream of the Red Chamber” is interpreted through the symbols of the “stubborn stone” and the “beautiful jade.” The essence of “Dragon Slope Miscellaneous Essays,” characterized by deep subtlety, desolation, and bitterness, is distilled into simplicity, straightforwardness, and vividness. Each chapter offers rich material for contemplation and appreciation.
