Language, Science, and Philosophical Analysis: Essays in Memory of Professor Cheng-Hung Lin

This volume contains twelve academic papers, all written in memory of Professor Cheng-hung Lin. It is divided into two major sections.

The first section, titled “Special Issue of Soochow Journal of Philosophical Studies,” comprises six articles that discuss topics such as how Taiwanese philosophers, most notably Professor Cheng-hung Lin, engage with the scientific realism debate; the cognitive structure of wisdom; the conventional analysis of speech acts; the cognitive function of thought experiments; the definitional dilemmas in gender theory; and the scientific exploration of a new model of biological mechanism. These articles highlight philosophical investigations into diverse and interdisciplinary topics.

The second section, titled “Articles from the Memorial Symposium for the Anniversary of Professor Cheng-hung Lin’s Passing,” also comprises six articles. Topics addressed include the logical reconstruction of the paradox “A White Horse is Not a Horse”; Xunzi's critique of Legalism and its ethical implications; an exploration of the concepts of name, reality, and class in Xunzi; a discussion on the definition of sexual orientation; an analysis of Kuhn’s later views on scientific rationality; and a review of the development of logic in post-war Taiwan. These articles showcase the rich and diverse landscape of philosophical research in Taiwan, paying tribute to Professor Cheng-hung Lin.
