Drama, ritual, and food are "three major legs of ordinary Chinese life" (Idema and West, 2010). These three aspects provide important vantage points from which to examine the delicate layering and plasticity of established social mores and institutions. They also call attention to the ruses, tactics, fragmental yet fundamental inversions that open up a productive habitat in the everyday. By delving into minor modes of cultural production, this book focuses on the discursive, transient, and incoherent plurality of everyday life. "Minor" modes of literary productions—such as drama, fiction, songs, encyclopedia—form a productive symbiosis with belles lettres and the literary canon with infinite measures of resourcefulness. Captured in these texts, daily routines and ventures tap into fundamental human emotions and psyches to test the boundaries of human agency as well as the fluidity of human communities. Questions addressed in this volume include: How spontaneous choices in mundane settings mirror the clandestine and the invisible, such that the marginal becomes intertwined with the universal? How new networks of relations emerge out of contingency and complicity? What new perspectives may come to light when we situate traditional China in the larger context of the Sinitic cultural sphere, such as Japan and Korea? The cross-disciplinary conversations in this volume aim at calling attention to the everyday as an indispensable aspect of literati writing that unveils the contingent, transitory aesthetics of establishing the self in a diverse, open empire—a way of being in the world.
