This book focuses on Confucians who lived mainly in the late early modern Japan, such as Nakai Chikuzan, Nakai Riken, Waki Ranshitsu, Shibano Ritsuzan, and Asaka Gonsai, and examines their interpretation of the classics and their philosophical practice. For these Confucians who studied Neo-Confucianism, interpretation of the classics was not merely an academic task of deciphering the meanings of classics such as the Analects of Confucius and the Book of Songs. Rather, it was a matter of understanding the words of sages and ancient wise men in the context of their own lives and directly connecting them to practice in real life, so that interpretation of the classics and philosophical practice are inextricably linked. In other words, it is scholarship as a life that considers things including changes in one’s temperament and the pursuit of human harmoniousness. It is nothing other than a way of living Confucianism.

Japanese Confucians were determined to pursue scholarship, and they tried to improve themselves and govern others by using the teachings of sages as a guide for life. This is the consciousness of the Confucian way. They ran academic schools and educated their students, thereby passing on awareness of this path to the next generation.

TIEN, Shih-min was born in 1976, Nantou, Taiwan. He graduated from Department of Japanese Language and Culture in Soochow University with bachelor degree, the Graduate Institute for Japanese Studies, Tamkang University with master degree, Graduate school of Education, and Faculty of Education, Kyoto University with Master and Ph. D. degree.

He was an assistant and associate professor of department of Japanese at Tamkang University, visiting researcher of Institute for Research in Humanities at Kyoto University. He is now an associate professor of the Department of Japanese Language and Literature at National Taiwan University.

His primary interests are Japanese culture and intellectual history, comparative of intellectual history in East-Asia.

His publication include Kinsei Nihon ni okeru jurei juyō no kenkyū(2012), Confucian Ritual Practice in Early Modern Japan: Focusing on Practice of the Confucians concerning Zhu X’s Family Rituals in Early Modern Japan(2012), A Study of Nakai Chikuzan's Thought on Shijing and Rituals (2014), and he translated Nihon shisō zenshi which was written by Masayuki Shimizu.
