The purpose of this handbook is to guide readers through the SQ3R reading strategy step by step, by introducing its principle and the advantages it brings to reading and comprehension. The handbook encourages students to acquire this reading strategy to cope with the large volume of reading required in class and to help them with exam preparation. As reading and writing are highly interrelated, students who have mastered how to formulate headings and establish the structure and context of an essay can transform themselves from good readers to a more advanced level, good writers.
This handbook includes six chapters. Chapter 1 provides a basic introduction to the SQ3R reading strategy, explaining and familiarizing readers with the five key steps of SQ3R: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. Chapter 2 is a literature review of recent empirical studies on the SQ3R reading strategy. Chapter 3 demonstrates how the E² Reading Strategy Workshop guides its participants to apply the SQ3R reading strategy in reading comprehension. Chapter 4 is a step-by-step guideline written by Facilitator Lin Jia-Ying. She carefully leads the readers through a journal article, indicating that a complicated text can be comprehended more easily with the aid of the SQ3R reading strategy. Chapters 5 and 6 discuss why it is recommended for undergraduate and postgraduate students to learn the SQ3R reading strategy experience sharing. The two chapters draw on the significance of the SQ3R strategy in improving students' reading comprehension through the use of practical examples across various academic disciplines.
