For the present volume, we have translated the final eight studies in A Reader. In comparison to Number 54, these studies deal with more recent historical eras, especially the postwar and post-martial law periods in Taiwan. Fiction and non-fiction prose figure more prominently here, as do themes of modernism and nativism. However, in designing A Reader, Professor Horng took pains to ensure that disenfranchised groups were appropriately represented, thus Chapter 14 explores issues in women’s and gay literature, while Chapter 15 outlines the history and nature of the Chinese language writing of Indigenous peoples in Taiwan. To round the volume out, Chapter 16 offers an overview of Taiwanese literature in the twenty-first century, noting the rise of a variety of new digital and internet-based literary forms. Taken together, we believe that issues Number 54 and 55 provide an important new resource for students of Taiwan’s literary history. We are grateful for Professor Tu’s foresight in conceiving this project, and for Professor Horng’s enthusiastic collaboration as we moved forward with our work.
