Reasoning cannot replace science, and stories cannot replace evidence. Scientific evidence should never be used to justify conclusions reached in advance. The greatest danger in the justice system is not the absence of evidence, but the tendency to begin with a conclusion and then select evidence to support it.

Introduction to Forensic Science for Citizen Judges offers an accessible introduction to crime scene investigation, forensic pathology, forensic toxicology, DNA analysis, child abuse evaluation, and forensic psychiatry. Drawing on real cases and interdisciplinary perspectives, it explores both the strengths and the limitations of forensic evidence in criminal justice. This is not a book about becoming a forensic expert. It is a guide for every citizen to better understand scientific evidence, question assumptions, appreciate uncertainty, and think critically about how justice is reached.
