Shen Gangbo was a distinguished historian at National Taiwan University. His lifelong scholarship may be summarized as an effort to uphold the dignity of history in an age of change. He did not seek distinction through grand theories. Instead, he relied on a calm and restrained scholarly temperament, rigorous training in historical evidence, and close attention to institutional contexts. By combining the meticulous methods of Qing evidential scholarship with the source-critical practices of British historiography, he developed a style of historical inquiry that was profound yet understated.

This volume brings together a selection of his major scholarly writings. Organized into five sections, it covers Chinese and Western historiography, ancient Chinese thought, comparative studies of Chinese and Western cultures, modern intellectual history and historical figures, as well as previously unpublished lecture outlines. The collection enables readers to trace the development of his scholarly concerns and methods, and to gain a fuller sense of the scope and achievement of his work.

Shen Gangbo placed particular emphasis on the need for historiography to respond to “the changes of the times.” He refused to reduce history to slogans or historical inevitabilities. Instead, he responded to reality through verifiable research, careful organization, and disciplined judgment. In his teaching, he sought to cultivate in researchers both moral commitment and critical discernment. The significance of this volume lies in guiding readers into Shen Gangbo’s scholarly world and showing how, amid the upheavals of the twentieth century, he remained committed to his post, responded to changing times, and established a model of historical scholarship worthy of emulation.

About the Author

Shen Gangbo (1896-1977) was a native of Yichang, Hubei Province. He received his early education within his family and later attended the Hubei School of Foreign Languages. After the Xinhai Revolution, he entered Wuchang Higher Normal School, from which he graduated in 1917 and where he subsequently remained as a teacher. In 1924, he went to the University of London on a government-funded scholarship to study history, specializing in British history, constitutional history, and Egyptology.

After returning to China in 1927, he taught successively at National Wuchang Sun Yat-sen University (now National Wuhan University), National Central University, etc., offering courses in world history and the histories of individual countries. In 1948, he came to Taiwan and served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Chair of the Department of History at National Taiwan University. After the death of Fu Ssu-nien in 1950, he served as acting president of the university. In 1954, he initiated the founding of the Chinese Historical Association; in 1961, he concurrently became the first chair of the Department of Library Science at National Taiwan University, helping to promote the institutional development of departments and graduate institutes. Indifferent to fame and fortune and rigorous in scholarship, he devoted his later years to the study of Chinese history and comparative studies of Chinese and Western cultures. He was elected an Academician of Academia Sinica in 1970 and passed away in 1977.


About the Editor

Huang Ko-wu is a Distinguished Research Fellow at the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica, and also serves as a professor in the history departments of National Taiwan Normal University and National Taiwan University. His research focuses on the intellectual and political history of late Qing and Republican China, as well as the history of Sino-foreign cultural exchange, with particular attention to modern Chinese liberalism, enlightenment thought, and the political choices of intellectuals.

His publications include The Rejected Path: A Study of Liang Qichao’s Accommodative Thinking (1994), The Meaning of Freedom: Yan Fu and the Origins of Chinese Liberalism (2008), Gu Mengyu’s Lofty Detachment: Another Possibility in Modern Chinese History (2020), Hu Shi’s Frustrations: Political Choices amid the Clash between Freedom and Authoritarianism (2021), and Yan Fu: The Man Who Awakened China with His Pen (2022), among others. He has also edited more than ten volumes, including A New History of Modern China Written by Scholars from Both Sides of the Taiwan Strait (2016).
