Cheng Ch'ien is a preeminent master in the fields of classical poetry (shi ), lyrics (ci), and Chinese dramatic song (qu). In the wake of Wang Guowei, he distinguished himself through profound originality and remarkable achievement. A foundational figure in modern Taiwanese studies of ci and qu, he also served as a vital bridge linking traditional scholarship with modern intellectual horizons. In both character and learning, he embodied an equanimous, open-minded breadth of cultivation, tempered by the poet's deep yet restrained sensibility. His extensive writings—whether scholarly treatises or creative poetry and prose—mirror the man himself: rich in substance, poised in tone, and as rewarding to savor as they are intellectually illuminating.
This selected collection brings together representative works from his studies of shi, ci, and qu, along with reading notes, prefaces, and occasional essays. Length is no criterion; priority is given to pieces that most fully reveal his scholarly contributions, distinctive insights, and enduring significance. The classical poems included here likewise offer a luminous reflection of his temperament, the depth of his learning, and the breadth of his life’s vision, attesting to his gifts as a writer. The appendix features his early lyric collection, Yongyin Ji, together with three newly included modern poems. Preserving the trajectory of his youthful writing across traditional and modern forms, these materials also provide an especially valuable point of reference for literary-historical research.
