How is literature produced? Having flourished in France and achieved a distinctive position within the global intellectual landscape, the sociology of literature has moved beyond the entrenched dichotomy of “internal” versus “external” analysis. Building on Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of the literary “field,” this volume offers a systematic examination of the multiple forms of mediation between literature and society. These mediations are articulated across three analytical levels—the production of literary works, the text of works, and their reception. Adopting a transnational and interdisciplinary perspective, and combining qualitative and quantitative approaches, the book provides a substantial survey of the discipline’s historical development and contemporary trajectories.

Gisèle Sapiro is CNRS Research Director and Professor of Sociology at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS).
