This book examines the key works of the important Taiwanese Hakka writer Lee Chiao, including The Wintry Night Trilogy, The Oath of Brotherhood at Xilai Temple, Buried Injustice in 1947, Mountain Woman, The Story of Fanzailin Forest, The Crying Sound, The fiction, and more. Focusing on Lee Chiao’s concept of “historical material novels,” the book traces his creative process, his engagement with Taiwan’s historical transformations, and the development of his narrative techniques. It explores his literary influences, such as William Faulkner and Abe Kōbō, and his reconstructions of events like the Tapani Incident, World War II, and the February 28 Incident, analyzing his approach to fiction and historical representation. Through a study of Lee Chiao’s writing, this book reexamines postwar Taiwanese literature and its socio-historical background, offering new insights into the intersections of history, narrative, and identity.
Prof. AKETAGAWA Satoshi was born in 1981 and holds a PhD in Literature from the Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology at University of Tokyo, Japan. He is an associate professor in the Chinese Studies Department at the Faculty of Letters, Chuo University, Japan. His research focuses on Taiwanese literature, Sinophone literature, and film studies. His major work is Literature, History, and Society of Post-War Taiwan: The Challenge of Hakka Writer Lee Chiao and Taiwanese Literature in the 21st Century. He has translated works by Lee Chiao, Huang Chong Kai, Essay Liu, Eugene Yuchin Chen, Lin Ting Yi, and Wu Sheng.

AKETAGAWA Taku pursued doctoral studies at the Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology, University of Tokyo. She holds dual master’s degrees from the University of Tokyo and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. She is a lecturer at Chuo University. Her major work includes The Cultural Institution of Cinema during the Japanese Colonial Period (1927-1937). She has translated The Future Cities We Dream of by IGARASHI Taro and ISO Tatsuo.
